July 2002 Journal

The month of July is finally here!  A lot of exciting things going on!  We will celebrate our nation's independence, MY BIRTHDAY and Grandma Proper's.

I am already letting go and taking steps to get places.  I'm not perfect at it yet...but it won't be long.  Then I can try that running thing everyone keeps talking about!

Happy 4th of July
July 4, 2002
Today we celebrate our nation's independence.  With everything that has been going on in the world lately, we hope that everyone takes the time to reflect on what America is all about.

We are having a nice quiet fourth.  It is sooo very hot here.  We, Mommy, Daddy, Uncle Mark and me did go down to the riverfront park for the music festival.  It was just too hot to stay for very long.  It was only 100 degrees!

Tonight we went to the Hershey Medical Center.  The Hershey Symphony Orchestra was having a free concert.  They played a lot of "patriotic" music along with some Disney tunes and other "American pop" music.  It

was fun and very relaxing.  Uncle Mark went with us and we just laid out our blanket and had a good old time.  There were quite a few people there and they were serving free refreshments too!  I had fun entertaining everyone with my "crab crawl" and I showed them how fast I could move down the sidewalk!  Mommy had a hard time keeping up with me!

After the concert was over, we got in the car and drove over to Hershey Park.  They were having the fireworks there.  It was very busy and cars were parked everywhere.  I was sleeping but Daddy finally found a spot along the road and we walked into the big field in front of the Milton Hershey School  There were a lot of people there setting off their own fireworks.  I slept through all of that.  Daddy got me up in time for the important ones though.  They were HUGE and loud.  I was a little fussy but mostly because I was soo sleepy not scared!  Uncle Mark took some pics with his camera, hopefully we can put some of his on this site so you can enjoy them too.

I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday!

God Bless the USA!!

 Saturday, July 6, 2002
22 lbs.
32 inches

Can you believe it?  One year has passed already...and so much has happened in such a short amount of time.  I've learned to eat, roll over, play with toys, crawl, walk (well, a little bit), clap my hands, give you "five" and so much more!

I am getting bigger everyday and more active.  I like to climb the stairs and crawl up on the trunk/coffee table in the basement.  I love to play with my cars and trucks and sit and look at my books.  I really enjoy crawling around outside too.  There is so much cool stuff out there!

Mommy and Daddy say that I am a good sleeper.  I take a nap everyday in my crib for about 3 hours and I go to bed at 8:30 (almost every night) and get up around 7:30 in the morning.  I am usually very happy...except when my teeth are bothering me.

Speaking of teeth, I still only have 2 but more should be coming in soon.  Although, I only have 2 teeth...I LOVE to eat!  Besides bananas still being one of my favorites, I enjoy eating other stuff too.  Like:  toasted cheese sandwiches, nectarines, pudding, crackers, pizza, hot dogs, fish sticks, green beans, peas, macaroni & cheese and ice cream!!!  I eat almost all grown up foods with the occasional baby food spaghetti...but it's pretty chunky!  So, that's okay.  I can feed myself pretty good too.  I'm just messy.  I haven't learned to use a spoon or fork yet. They just get in the way. I use my sippy cup and drink milk with breakfast, lunch and dinner.   I still drink one bottle at bedtime.  Mommy said when the formula is gone...the bottle is gone.  I think I only have a few days left...oh no.

I will be going to the doctors next week.  Both Besselmen and Dr. Hollowell.  So, be sure to check back in for those updates.  I hope we get good news.  Grammy and Pap-pap are coming in for the week and I think we are going to go to Baltimore, Maryland to see the Aquarium.  That should be fun!

National Aquarium in Baltimore
July 7, 2002
Today, Mommy, Daddy, Grammy, Pap-pap, Uncle Mark and me all went to the National Aquarium in Baltimore.  It only took about an hour and a half to get there but I still snoozed on the way.  As soon as we got there I got to ride around on Daddy in this backpack thing.  You weren't allowed to have strollers in the aquarium.  I could see all kinds of stuff from up there!  First we saw sting rays...all different kinds of them.  Some were big and some were little.  I saw a dolphin show too.  They swam around this big pool and did all kinds of jumping tricks and splashing people.  I wasn't too sure about that though.
After the show we decided to go for lunch.  We went to California Pizza.  I got to sit in a big boy booster seat and I did a great job!  I ate a lot of Mommy and Daddy's crust.
After lunch we went back to the aquarium and looked at more strange fish, walked through the rain forest and saw some really big sharks!!
The coolest thing was out in the sting ray tank.  We were looking from under the water now.  There was a guy scuba diving around in there and feeding them.  The sting rays would slide right up the glass and we could see them up close.  It was sooo cool!
Grammy and Pap got me a hat, t-shirt, little seahorse squirter and a dolphin "magic towel".
We all had a nice time.

Cole's 1 Year Check-Up with Dr. Besselman
July 9, 2002
I had my one year check up today.  Dr. Besselman said that I was a very healthy little boy.  My height is in the 90th percentile and my weight falls in the 50th.  My height is a good sign that my kidney isn't causing anymore problems for me besides what we already know.  Which is good!  I wasn't very happy for the nurse when she was measuring me but I had just gotten up from a nap.  Plus, it has been very hot outside.  I was okay after a bit.  I showed Dr. Besselman how I can walk.  I guess he was checking my feet.  I did get 2 shots but they only hurt for a little while.  I got over it pretty quickly.  I was excited because he said that I can have strawberries, honey and peanut butter now.  So, Mommy made me a PB&J sandwich for lunch!  It was yummy!  I go again to the doctors in October.

Cole's Kidney Ultrasound and Follow-up
July 11, 2002
I had to go for this thing they call an ultrasound today.  Mommy and Daddy said that it wouldn't hurt and that I had it done before.  I don't remember that!  Anyway...it was NOT fun at all!  Mommy and Daddy had to hold me down on my back while this lady (she was very nice but I didn't care about that at all!) rubbed this gooey stuff all over my belly!  It seemed to take forever!  After she was done,  I was allowed to get dressed while she went and got the radiology doctor.  He said that my kidney (upper pole) is improving, mildly, but improving.  (Remember, I have a duplex system, so it's like my kidney is in two parts.  The top half is partially functioning while the bottom portion has a reflux).  After we were there I got to go see Dr. Hollowell.  She is really nice to me and has all kinds of cool books and toys in her waiting room to play with.  I didn't have to do anything there, she just talked with Mommy and Daddy about the ultrasound.  She agreed with the doctor and said that I don't need to go for another ultrasound until next year.  I have to keep taking my medicine (antibiotic...an infection could further damage the kidney).  In a year we will see what kind of operation I will need.  She said that the kind of reflux I have doesn't statistically "get better".  I will have another dye test to make sure though.  She said we will either remove the lower portion that isn't functioning at all or try and rebuild it.  She's a pretty smart lady and Mommy and Daddy said she would do the best she can for me.

Dutch Wonderland!
July 13, 2002
Mommy, Daddy, Grammy, Pap-pap and me went to Dutch Wonderland today!  It was so much fun!  First, we rode the choo-choo train all around the park.  Daddy said this park was the perfect size for me.  Everything is scaled down to a kids perspective.  There aren't very many rides for the grown-ups.  Next, I rode Old 99 with Mommy.  We got to sit in a train car and ride around the track.  It was kind of fast.  I got to ring the bell on the train!  I rode in a space ship with Daddy.  It went up, down and sideways!  We went on a boat ride, the merry go round and monorail too!  I played an arcade game and won a stuffed snake!  We also watch a diving show.  This guys jumped in the water from way up high and got almost everyone wet!!  I had a nice time with my family and got some cool souvenirs too!

Cole's First "Gooney"
July 17, 2002
So, I'm flopping around on the pillows, having a good old time...when....WHAMO!!  I bang my face off of the side of the sofa!  YEEOUCH!  Mommy tried to make me feel better but MAN...did that hurt.  I have a nice red shiner around my left eye.  Daddy said that I need to watch what I'm doing.  I was just having so much fun, I guess I forgot where I was!  Mommy said it was a good thing that my 1 year pictures were taken that morning and not the next day!  After some kisses and lots of attention, I was back to my old tricks.  Guess, I'll never learn.  Daddy said that's what being a boy is all about.
Trip to "Uncle" Mark's Hometown
July 19, 2002
Mommy, Daddy, Uncle Mark and me went to his hometown, Downingtown, PA, yesterday.  We were spending the day at Marsh Lake State Park.  First, we dropped off Uncle Mark at the boat house.  He was meeting his friend Libby and going kayaking.  Although, that sounded like soo much fun.  I am much to little and it was way too hot out.  So, Mommy, Daddy and me went to the pool that was there.  We got in the wading pool that was only 1 foot deep.  I wasn't too sure about it at first, but there were a lot of kids to watch.  After I got used to it I had fun splashing Daddy and playing with another little boy that was there.  After a snack, Mommy took me in the big pool.  We counted 1...2...3 and jumped in the pool.  Daddy was holding on to me the whole time.  That was a fun game.  I had about enough after a couple hours.  I was getting tired.  Uncle Mark caught back up with us and we went to his Mommy and Daddy's new house.  It was really nice and I had a fun time checking everything out.  My favorite was the cupboard in the living room.  It had a door on it just my size that I could open and shut.  It made a neat squeaky sound.  We had a yummy dinner.  I had a PB & J and the grown ups had steak!  It sure did look good.  After dinner and some more visiting, we met Uncle Mark's friends (Jake, John, Libby and Laura) at Dairy Queen for some ice cream.  It was late and we still needed to go home.  I was sooo sleepy but had a great time.  I hope we visit them again soon.

Almost a "Pro"
July 27, 2002
When I took my first steps in June, I never realized what a HUGE thing this walking business is.  I have gotten pretty good at it now.  I hardly ever crawl anywhere.  Even if I do fall down, I just get right back up on to my feet and continue walking.  I've realized that since I am walking I can get in to more stuff, crawl up on to things better, dance and hop...well, a little bit.  It won't be long now before I can walk for a long time without falling down.  I just have to be careful.  I already was walking outside on the sidewalk and fell on the cement.  Boy, that hurt!  My nose is all red like Rudolph.  Mommy said that is what happens when you kiss the cement!

Camping in Elk County
July 29th - August 1st, 2002
Me, Mommy and Daddy went to Benezette in Elk County.  We went camping with "Aunt" Jenny Baker and her family.  There were 14 of us there.  Us, Aunt Jenny, Jessica, Grammy Boltz, Grandma Snyder, Pap Snyder, Brian, Sherri, Maria, Jonathan Boltz, Chad and Laurie Bittenbender.

We got there around noon on Monday and had lunch.  Then we went for a ride in the car up to Shelley's camp.  After visiting there for a bit, we took some rafts down to the creek.  Daddy let me walk in the water up to my waist.  I really liked it.  The water was soo cool and refreshing because it was really hot that day.  After a quick swim we went back up to camp.  I hung out with Grammy B. and I had a good time playing with Jessica, Jonathan and Maria.  They had their dogs there too, Muffin, Samantha and Abby.  I liked Sam best...she was a friendly dog.  Abby kept biting my toes and shorts!!  It didn't hurt though...just really tickled.  Mommy and Daddy went with Aunt Jenny to the swinging bridge.  Mommy said it was really scary.  It's a bridge over the creek that goes to someone's hunting cabin.  They have a pulley system rigged up because it is the only way to get to their place!  Crazy!   Later, that night we went elk spotting.  We saw a lot of doe but no bulls.  We saw 15 all together.   Well, Mommy and Daddy did...I was sleeping.  It had been a busy day.  I didn't go to bed until late but once I fell asleep I was out for the night.  The grown ups stayed up really late playing cards!  Little did they know......

I did wake Daddy up early this morning.  We went for a morning drive and saw a lot more deer this time.  It wasn't as hot today as it was yesterday.  We played a lot in the camp today while the grown ups did some relaxing and visiting.  Spotting was a lot more fun tonight.  We saw around 30 all together.  Daddy got really close to a huge bull elk...he had a lot of points on his antlers and had a fishing net stuck on them!!  Then near a ball field Mommy and Daddy got close to another one.  He was much smaller.  Mommy got them all on video.  We had our old camera with us so hopefully the pictures will come out.  On the way back to camp, we stopped to see a whole herd of doe and babies crossing the road.  They almost got wiped out by a car speeding up the road.  He should have slowed down because we had our cars off the road with flashers on.  Mommy said he was lucky!  When we got back we did some "Perler Beads".  It's a craft where you put this little beads on a peg board in a design and then melt them together with an iron.  Mommy made my name and Daddy made a pirate ship and flag.  He and Brian were having a good time..."crafting".  I don't know if they will ever admit that!  I sure hope that Mommy took a picture or captured it on video!  I went to bed like a good boy tonight and slept much better this time.  Those crazy grown ups were up again late...playing games!

Lucky for them, I slept in this morning!  We got up and went with Aunt Jenny to Ames to get creek shoes.  I was able to take a nice nap on the way there and back.  When we got back to camp, all us kids (me, Jessica, Maria, Jonathan) made plaster casts of our hand prints.  I couldn't hold my hand still long enough, so Daddy let me do my foot.  We had to set them out to dry.  After a busy day of playing and chasing the dogs... we went down to the creek to cool off.  We no longer stuck our toes in the water when it started to thunder and lightening.  We got out right away and got in the cars because we thought it may blow over....it never did :(.   So, we went back up to camp and the grown ups played some more games.  Aunt Jenny and Jessica even washed their hair in the rain!!!  That was funny.

Thursday morning, after breakfast we got packed up to head for Grandma and Grandpa Proper's house.  I had such a fun time at camp.  I hope that Mommy and Daddy take me again next year!  Maybe I can sleep on the big mattress with the rest of the kids!
