August 2002 Journal

I will be 13 months old this month.  I have pretty much mastered this walking thing.  Only when I get going too fast or not paying attention to what I'm doing, do I fall down.

My updates may not be as frequent as they were my first year of life but I'm sure you will still have plenty to read about!

Visit to Kinzu Dam
August 1 , 2002
Leaving camp today, we decided to make a side trip to Allegheny National Forest on our way to Grandma and Grandpa's house.  We stopped for lunch along the way and went to an overlook to see the Allegheny River.  It sure was pretty and we were really high up.  We went to see the Kinzu Dam.  It was pretty big.  Daddy said when he was little you could go out on it and look down.  Not since the terrorists attacked us on September 11th...they have put up a security gate.  We drove down to the river so we could get a better look at the dam.  It sure was noisy and there was a lot of water falling down.  It was pretty cool.  There were these huge fish swimming around the dam too.  I wish we could have gotten closer to them.  I would have liked to have fed them!  They may have enjoyed some of my peanut butter sandwich!  HA HA.
Grandma and Grandpa Proper's House
August 1 - 4 , 2002
Since we were in the neighborhood, we decided to spend a couple days at Grandma and Grandpa Proper's house.  They were excited to see us.  I was all ready to tear up the house!  I think I wore out Mommy and Daddy for the first half hour we were there.  All I know is that I kept ending up back in the living room!  Grandpa got the tractor out for me and we took it for a ride in the woods!  I stayed awake for it this time.  We had a fun ride and Daddy drove...he almost tipped Grandma right off of the wagon!!  Later, I got to drive...yes, I got to drive, the John Deere lawn mower all around the yard!  Vroom-vroom!

My favorite things to play with at Grandpa's besides the tractor, were Grandma's rolls of gift wrap and empty milk jugs.  I don't know why Mommy doesn't have that stuff around here!

We had a nice visit and I hope that they come here to visit soon!

Two-Mile Run
August 2 , 2002
It was a hot day at Grandma and Grandpa's house so Daddy found a  place for us to go to cool off.  we went to Two-Mile Run in Oil City, PA.  It's only 1/2 hour from Grandpa's house.  Daddy went there when he was a little boy.  It's a man-made lake with a nice little beach.  We packed a picnic lunch and off we went.  It was nice out and wasn't very crowded at all.  I was a little nervous at first but had fun in the water, once I got used to it.  We could go pretty far out before Mommy had to pick me up.  I had fun splashing Daddy!  Plus, I got to play in the sand!  Daddy kept building sand castles...I had fun knocking them down!  We stayed and played there for about 4 hours and then we came home.  Boy, was I sleepy after all that swimming!
"Uh-Oh"
August 4 , 2002
I guess you could say that these were my first words!  All I know is that I get a huge reaction from just about anyone when I say it.  It's especially funny when I "drop" something on the ground and then say it!  I was even entertaining the people sitting next to us in Eat n' Park today.  We met Grammy Wiles and Mert Miller for lunch and dessert on our way back to Harrisburg!
I'm 13 Months Old!!
August 6 , 2002
I am not going to do my front page updates every month this year.  I will probably do one when I'm 15 months old.  So, for now and in here I will just let you know some little things I may be doing or accomplished.

I am walking pretty good now and have figured out how to open the bathroom and closet doors in the living room.  I am getting pretty fast at walking...I may try that running thing soon.

I still have only 2 teeth and am eating all big boy foods now.  Haven't had baby food for quite some time.  I still have my bottle at night because we haven't finished that can of formula yet!!  It won't be long though...and I really don't think it will be all that hard to do.  We'll find out, I guess.

I can go down a couple stairs, especially the step down into my Grandparent Proper's living room.  However, I'm a little hesitant with our steps at home...even with Daddy's help.  I can climb up on things and get back down...unscathed.  Well, for the most part!

I'm saying a few things:  "uh-oh", "dada" and "nene".  I don't know if Mom and Dad have figured out what I mean by them yet or not.  But if they ask me if I'm hungry or if I want some juice...I'll say "nene".  I like to try and mimic sound and sometimes I get pretty close to what you are doing.

We didn't do a weigh in this month but I'm still growing strong, wearing sizes 12-18 months clothes and size 4 diapers.

My First Play Date
August 12 , 2002
Mommy took me to Derrick Ciesielka's house today to play.  He has a huge dog named Atticus.  She was very friendly but she is a HUGE dog!  She knocked me down with a single swipe of her tail!  I didn't like that so much.  We went down stairs to his new basement.  It is all fixed up and he has all kinds of cool toys.  I really liked trying out all kinds of new toys.  He has this really cool light.  When Mommy plugged it in it would spin and shine all kinds of different colors around the room.  Derrick has a new baby sister.  She is only 8 weeks old.  She slept while we were playing.  I kept checking on her.  We stayed for about 2 hours and then I came home for lunch and my nap.  We had a good time and Derrick is going to come to my house and play someday soon!
No More "B-O-T-T-L-E"
August 12, 2002
Mommy and Daddy said this earlier today and I guess they meant it because I had a sippy cup full of milk at bedtime tonight.  You know what....I was okay with that.  At first I went into the kitchen to check for my bottle, ya know, incase they forgot and accidentally gave me the wrong thing.  I couldn't see it anywhere, so I just drank my milk while Mommy read me a story.  I relaxed a little with Daddy on the living room floor and played with Pap-pap for a bit before I went up to bed at 8:30.  I guess I am growing up!
IOSAT - (Potassium Iodide Tablets-KI)
 August 17, 2002

WHAT?  Today, Mommy and Daddy took me over to the Lower Paxton Middle School.  We had to pick up these pills.  Since we live within a 10-mile radius of TMI (Three Mile Island, it's a nuclear power plant).

WHY?  Gov. Mark Schweiker accepted the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's offer of these pills to further Pennsylvania's mission to ensure the safety and security of it's citizens in a post-September 11th world.

We are to take one dose every 24 hours, not to exceed 2 doses, while "evacuating" the area in the case of a radiation leak that contains radioactive iodine.  Taking this tablet will help to protect the thyroid gland, since it is the part of the body that quickly absorbs harmful radioactive iodine.  KI will not protect us against all radioactive materials and is not a substitute for evacuation.  We are to ONLY take the pills when instructed by the PA State Health Officials and the Governor.

**Kind of a depressing journal entry, but Mommy and Daddy thought it would be an interesting tidbit of history to look back on 30 years from now!  :)  Hopefully, we will have never had to use them!

Grammy & Pap-Pap Visit
 August 11-18, 2002

Grammy and Pappy took another vacation to come see me!  I must be pretty special because they stayed with me (Mommy & Daddy too!) for the whole week!  We had a really nice time.  It was just too bad that the weather was TOO hot!  The heat indexes (whatever those are) never got under 100 degrees and when they did, it was raining. So, I just got to show off how smart and funny I can be.  They seemed pretty happy with that!

 THANKS for everything!

Grammy and Mommy did a lot of shopping and I got some new clothes for Fall.  Grammy got me a new "vroom-vroom" (...for those of you who don't speak "baby"...in this instance, that means "bright green monster truck").  It took me a little while to figure out how to make it go without tipping it over. Now, I can give it a good push and it goes all the way across the living room!

While Grammy spoiled me with clothes and toys...Pap kept the rest of us happy with ice cream and Krispy Kream Donuts!

The house is quiet without them here.   Mommy & Daddy say that I'm changing a lot and it's good that they got to come.
