July 2006 Journal

Happy Birthday to Me!  I am FIVE years old now!

No one seems to know where the time went and can not believe that I will be going to kindergarten in the Fall!

Can you believe that there is 5 years worth of stuff on this website?  WOW!

Trip to Grammy & Pap-Pap's House
June 30 - July 3, 2006
We went to visit Grammy and Pap-Pap for the 4th of July weekend.  We got on the road shortly after Mommy got off of work and were in Kittanning by 8:30, which gave us lots of time to visit before I had to go to bed.  I like going on little vacations, because I don't have to go to bed on time.
Saturday ~ July 1st:  Grammy arranged for all her breakfast club girls to meet in Smicksburg so we could eat and visit with Ronna, who sadly, was recently was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease.  We ate at a yummy restaurant and I had French toast with bacon...yum!  After breakfast, we went to Ronna's house.  She lives on a farm with her parents and they have horses!  Ronna's husband, Dave, races them!  I have watched a few of those with Pap on TV and we yell and yell, telling Dave to "crack the whip!".  I had a fun time running around the barn with Ronna's two grandchildren, petting the horses, cats, and goats.  Then we picked strawberries...I don't like eating them, but picking them was fun!  It was soon time for us to go back home...we stopped at an Amish store and Grammy bought me some homemade licorice and Mommy got some noodles.  After lunch it was time to go down to Ford City for the festival, Heritage Days and get our seats for the parade.  I rode some rides and jumped (a lot) in the "moon walker" thing.  I told Mommy I had to practice my jumping.  Anyway, it was time for the parade.  We had good seats and a lot of fun yelling at the people to throw me some candy.  Mertie was there to make sure that no one missed me!  I got a lot of candy!  We watched Larissa march with the band and Lauren rode on a float with the cheerleaders.  I liked the "zem-zems" riding their little cars and motorcycles...that was cool.
Sunday ~ July 2nd:  Today Mommy, Daddy and me went to a Pirate Game in Pittsburgh with Uncle JG.  We drove to his apartment to meet up with him and I wanted to see where he lived.  Uncle JG drove us to the game...I was so excited to ride in his car!  It's sooo awesome because the roof comes down.  I thought that was great....windy....but great!  We got to the game and got some yummy fries to eat and I got a cool Pirate flag and an M&M's Hotwheels car.  I wasn't much into watching the game, but I did like the stuff they put on the big TV screen.  They had this cool cartoon of a Pirate ship blowing up all the other pirate ships.  Mommy said that they were the other teams.  Whatever, it was cool!  The beginning of the game was rough....the Detroit Tigers scored 2 homeruns and 2 other runs in the first inning!  Finally...the Pirates got in the game around the 5th and 7th innings.  Daddy and me missed the 5th inning action due to potty and cotton candy breaks!  We did get to see the 7th and there sure was a lot of yelling, jumping up and down and flag waving that inning....now, that was fun!  Daddy and me did miss the big excitement though, again a potty break.  I guess a Stealth Fighter flew over the stadium!  They stopped play of the game and everything for it!  Bummer!  Mommy said it was so cool.  It was in town for the Regatta.  She was bummed that we missed it AND that Daddy had the camera!  Oh well....what can you do.  The Pirates ended up losing the game, 9-8.  It could have easily been tied....the 9th inning we had bases loaded and only 1 out, but they couldn't pull if off.  It was still a fun time and we stopped for ice cream before taking Uncle JG home.
Monday ~ July 3rd:  Mommy & Grammy went for breakfast together and did some shopping while Daddy and me slept in and spent the day playing baseball in the backyard!  Funny, no one thought I was really paying attention to the game...but I was!  We packed up our stuff and decided to head back home today, so we would have all day tomorrow to get ready for my big birthday party on Saturday!

We were kind of sad that we didn't get to see everyone for a picnic this fourth of July but we still had a nice relaxing visit!  Mommy would like to come home for the Folk Festival but I don't know if that will be possible or not.  We'll see.

Happy Birthday to ME!
July 6, 2006
TODAY...is my birthday!  I am five years old!  Mommy got me chocolate bars to take to school for my friends.  That is what I wanted.  However...all day at school...EVERY TIME Mommy walked by my class...she would clap really loud and sing "Happy birthday, happy, happy, birthday!"  All my friends would laugh and cover their ears!  She was really loud!
I picked Red Robin to go to for dinner.  I wanted their pizza.  Daddy and Mommy wanted to send the waiters over to sing to me, but I wasn't in the mood for that.  No thanks.
After dinner, I picked going to play miniature golf.  Daddy suggested that we go to Adventure Sports.  I think we went there last year for my birthday!  Anyway...that was fun.  I never played golf there and when we pulled in...my exact words were..."wow, this place rocks and it's beautiful!"  I did pretty good playing golf...even got a HOLE in ONE!  Mommy had two of them and Daddy didn't get any.  Mommy isn't sure if the hole in one was a good thing for me or not, because after that...I thought that is what I should always get.  Anyway, we had a nice time.  Then it was off to the arcade!  I played some skeeball but then Daddy eyes glazed all over and he started "running" over to this thing (Mommy said it's called pinball)....MEDIEVAL MAAAADNESSSSSS!    After we got Daddy to snap out of it, he and I played it for a long time.  It's really cool...there is a castle that you can "blow up" and trolls to get.  We, of course, had to play air hockey (another favorite of mine) and then it was outside to the Go Karts!  Daddy got enough tickets for us to ride two times and for Mommy to ride once.  What fun!  We passed her, then she passed us, then we passed her!  Daddy gets a bit competitive on those things...he would never admit it though :).   Daddy and me had fun making faces at Mommy when she was taking pictures.  It was a fun night.
It got even better....when we got home Grandma and Pa-Pa arrived shortly.  I got to open all my gifts from Mommy and Daddy.  Plus, Pa-Pa had brought me a few little things to open.  Mommy and Daddy got me: A Looney Tunes DVD, spelling/word puzzles, Superman TV tray, Hotwheels Acceleracer toy and the Imaginext Dinosaur play set that I wanted so much!  AWESOME!  Thanks.
I can't wait until my party this weekend....it will be so much fun and I can't wait to play with my friends!

Hershey Gardens
July 7, 2006
I got to stay home with Grandma and Pa-Pa today and they took me to the Hershey Gardens.  Grandma loves flowers and stuff, so it was just the place for her and she has been wanting to visit it for some time.
I had a nice time walking around...I just like being with my grandparents.  We visited all kinds of neat looking things.  The roses were cool, the butterfly house and the new children's section of the garden.  There also was a neat display of gigantic wooden bugs throughout the gardens.  I liked all of them...except the giant spider....I don't like spiders!
We had a fun day and of course, had to go to McDonald's for lunch!

Is it time for my party yet?!?

Shiver Me Timbers!  It's PARTY Day!
July 8, 2006
Today was the BIG day!  My Pirate Party!  It ROCKED!  Thanks Mom & Dad!
Everyone who is anyone...was at my party!  Mommy, Daddy, Uncle JG, Grammy, Grandma, Pa-Pa, Aunt Susan, Uncle Allen (who by the way, brought the popular "keg O' Rootbeer!"), The Hartley's, The Fisher's, The Lemmon's, Martinelli's, Ciesielka's, Garlinger's, my school friends - Kyle, Trent and Patrick!
Mommy read How I Became A Pirate.  We all got cool pirate skull tattoos!  We ate yummy pizza, chips and watermelon!  We "walked the plank", played "pin the eye patch on the Pirate", went on a "treasure hunt" and found wooden treasure boxes full of gold coins that we could paint.  We beat up a Pirate Ship piņata and got lots of candy!  We ate cake and ice cream.  Played a water relay game and then Mommy did a cool trick with Diet Coke and Mentos!  You will have to check out the video clip of that and the pictures Daddy took!  Everyone had a fun time and everyone got me some really cool gifts!  I was sad to see my friends have to go home, but was excited that my buddy Sam stayed for awhile.  They drove all the way from West Virginia just for my party!  After things settled down a bit....I got to open my gifts.  I got all I asked for and more.  Some things were:  Dinosaurs, Tinker Toys, John Deere tractors, HotWheels Scooter, Thomas train bridges, Lego building sets, HotWheels car sets, Pirates shirt, a soccer net and some money.  I know I missed some things....but thanks to everyone for thinking of me!
Later, the gang (Hartley's, Fisher's, Lemmons' and Proper's) headed out to Chocolate World.  My buddy Sam loves that place and hasn't seen it since they re-designed the ride.  I sat with him in the front and was sure to point out everything new...so he didn't miss any of it!
We all headed back to my house and watched one of my new movies, Scooby-Doo meets Batman.  Before we knew it, it was very late and time for everyone to go home.  What a great birthday party....thanks again and I LOVE ALL OF YOU!

Adventure Sports...again!
July 9, 2006
Today was a day to relax.  Everyone had been busy all week getting things ready to make my party such a huge success.  However, we decided that we should do something fun, since the weather was so nice.  I wanted to take Grandma and Pa mini golfing!  So, back to Adventure Sports!  I did really well again....all except that time I got goofy and lost my ball in the water!  Bummer!  Mommy and me shared her ball and golfed ahead, it was very crowded.  I managed to win a free game at the last hole though...no one else could get it in the top spot!  Am I great or what?!
Daddy and me played that pinball game again...I can't seem to remember the name of it....wait, I'll ask Daddy.  Oh, yes....MEDIEVAL MAAAAAAAADNESSSSSS!  Again, off for more Go Karts and this time we (Mommy, Daddy and me) decided to take the Bumper Boats for a spin.  Man, I wish we had the camera along!  WHAT FUN!  (At the time of course, I wouldn't admit it later)....you get in these boats and ride around spraying water at people.  Mommy pushed Daddy and me under the waterfall and we were soaked!  I laughed and laughed....spraying Mommy and whoever else got in out way!  Then Daddy (he says it was Mommy's idea, but I KNOW the truth!) suggested we get the grandparents who were quietly sitting along the bank outside the fence....we headed that way like we were going to park our boats and....WHAMO!  We got em' good....other people joined in as well...it was funny!  Everyone just laughed and laughed.  Before we knew it...time was up and we had to get out.  That's when I got cold and didn't like being wet.  We all got home and put on dry clothes and ate some leftover pizza for supper!

I had a GREAT birthday weekend!  When is my next one?

Dr. Hollowell Reports
July 9, 2006
Finally, we heard back from my urologist about the results of my February 2006 ultrasound!  There had been some confusion, mixed with vacation timings, and she got in touch with us today.  Anyway, the test looked much better than last years, but last years had looked much worse than the one before.  She figures this is just going to be the way it is, since the kidney had been so stretched before surgery.  Since I have not had any tract infections, I will not have to have that bladder dye test done...this is great news.  She still would like another ultrasound next July, in 2007 and she gave us her home phone number and address so we don't have the mix-up again.  What a great lady...we wish she was still in PA!

Strep Throat!
July 11, 2006
Guess I partied too much this weekend.  I've ended up with Step throat.  Mommy thought I wasn't looking, feeling, sounding right yesterday morning and by the afternoon at school...I had a slight temp. and my tongue looked like a strawberry!  I told Mommy that my throat hurt.  Daddy took me to the doctors today and YUP, it's strep throat.  I took my medicine like a big boy and am feeling a little better already.  I get to stay home with Daddy and can go back to school to be with my friends of Thursday!  YAY!

My 5-Year Check-Up
July 19, 2006
Mommy took me to my check-up today.  I was not looking forward to it because I knew I was going to have to get a shot!  I did good though, I screamed through them but sat very still on Mommy's lap for the doctor.  He said that after these, I won't need anymore until I am 10 years old!  Thank goodness!
Anyway, I weigh 38 pounds (35th percentile) and am 42 3/4 inches tall (50th percentile), making me "long and lean".  This is a good thing!  I had to do an eye exam, that was fun and the nurse said my eyes are 20/30, which is normal for my age.   My blood pressure was 82/40 and that is normal too!  Everything checked out great!
However, I did hear Dr. Besselman talking with Mommy about sending me to Kindergarten.  He highly recommends, since I just turned 5, that she hold me back a year from going.  I haven't been told much about this yet...but looks as if that is what Mommy & Daddy are going to do.  It would be a huge advantage for me to begin my school career as one of the older children.  Maturity is the issue, not so much now...but "down the road", like in middle school.  Sending me now, could put me in class with kids almost 2 years older than me!  I know what ever decision Mommy and Daddy make will be for my best interests!  I already know my letters and most of my numbers, write my name and other words and am starting to figure out simple math problems....so just think how much smarter I will be a year from now!

Day Trip To Philadelphia
July 22, 2006
We live so close to Philadelphia, there is so much to do there, and we hardly ever go!  So...we headed out today to go visit the Insectarium, a bug museum!  Daddy and me collected a few specimens of our own to share.  The girl working there was excited to see them.  We caught a huge spider (Mommy didn't like that it was so close to our house!), a tiny grasshopper, a beetle and another little spider.  Turns out both spiders were Wolf Spiders (very common...harmless).  We saw all kinds of "bugs", some alive but most dead and caught from around the World.  Some were bigger than Mommy's hand!  Some looked like leaves and sticks!  My favorite to look at were the giant spiders!  Mommy liked the beetles that looked like little rhinoceroses.  Daddy liked the African Millipede!  He got to hold it too.  I got to pet it, a Giant Hissing Coachroach and a Whip Scorpion!  They had a neat display of a kitchen/bathroom set up with bugs crawling all over the place.  It showed you how if you don't clean up, you can get quite an infestation.  Ewww!  Also, we learned that if you would get bit by a tarantula, it would only kill you or make you sick, if you were allergic to it's bite.  Also, people in other countries like to use some of the colorful beetles for jewelry...some tying them on to their shirt by their leg with a long string so they can walk around!  I got some "bugs" in the gift shop and Daddy bought some Cheddar Cheese Mealworms for us to try!  We haven't done that yet...will give an update later!  I wanted the chocolate ones instead, but Mommy said they were too expensive for me to bite and spit out!
Next, we thought we would try and find a geocache before we headed into the city! It had just rained, so that should have been our first clue to turn back...but we persevered.  We went to this nice little wooded park with a creek...it wasn't long until we were engulfed in a swarm of mosquitoes!  We were close to ground zero, so we continued when Daddy let out a holler!  "OUCH!  Don't step on this thing!"  Mommy and I carefully step around (or so we thought we did) the "thing"...and OUCH...OUCH....OUCH!  It felt like our legs were on fire!  I yelled and lost my gum, so that pretty much did me in!  Daddy and Mommy's legs looked like they had been stung over and over by something! (After some internet research, the plant we came in touch with was a Stinging Nettle Weed!)  We quickly aborted our mission and headed for the car.  I did hear a lot of mumbling about this and that but we all gathered ourselves and decided to go into the city and to another museum.
We were going to go to the Children's Please Touch Me Museum.   We took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up at the Franklin Institute.  I thought it looked cool because they had this bike on a wire that people were riding on, right over our heads!  We ate lunch at the cafe (Mmm...pizza!) and decided to stay there!  It was a fun time.  I especially liked the Staircase Pendulum and the Giant Heart!  You can walk through it like you are following the blood flow.  We did that a couple of times!  We tried to watch a planetarium show but it freaked me out.  They had a cool train factory section and animation section.  I got to make my own stop motion cartoon!  That was fun!  I really enjoyed myself and Mommy thinks I am developing an interest in science.
I really enjoyed our day in Philly!  We will probably come back and visit again soon! I like going to cities and this one had some neat looking buildings and water fountains that we would like to explore next time!
