July 2007 Journal

This should be an exciting month!  It starts out with TWO great holidays!  The 4th of July AND my birthday!

Can you believe I will be SIX?!  WOW!  It's gonna be a great year, I can feel it in my bones!  I told Mommy that I'm excited to be SIX because it is so much better than five!

So....let my SIXTH year begin.....

The New Lego Magazine Arrives
July 3rd, 2007
Got home from "school" today and Daddy was bringing in the mail....that is when I saw it sticking out from under all the other bills and junk mail...a NEW LEGO MAGAZINE!  I ripped it from Daddy's hands, just like a magician clears a tablecloth from a cluttered table of dishes!  I quickly cleared a spot on my playroom floor where I could get a closer look!  "This is the best day ever, Dad!"  "You have got to come see this, it is awesome!"  "I am so excited!".  It was filled with some of my old favorites, plus some new and exciting things like a whole collection called "Mission to Mars" and a Castle collection.  I like the one shaped like a skull!  They made a Harbor for the Lego City collection now and I think it's cool too.  I could go on and on.  There aren't many in the catalog that I don't like.
I was quickly reminded that I do have a birthday coming up and I am going to keep saving up my allowances and add some birthday money to it and buy something BIG!
I have already worn out the cover of my catalog, Mommy had to tape it up and re-staple it.  I've shown it to everyone and Mommy has caught me a few times staying up in bed, when I should be sleeping, reading it!

I LOVE LEGO'S!

Happy Independence Day!
July 4th, 2007
Today is a holiday, celebrating America and our freedom!  Mommy tried explaining it all to me and I kind of "get it".  Anyway, we all had the day off.  Usually we are at Grandparents Wiles for this holiday but that just didn't work out this year.  It's hard when the holiday is in the middle of the week!  Anyway, after our lazy, lay around weekend, we (Mommy) planned a fun day!
First, we went to a place not to far from here, called Indian Echo Caverns.  I really liked the cave we visited last year (Penn's Caves) so Mommy thought I would like this one too.  It wasn't crowded at all and we didn't have to wait long for our tour to begin.  They have a nice playground and pavilion area, so we hung out there while we waited.  Our tour guide quickly gathered up our group and off we went.  He was very funny (well, I am assuming, since I did hear the grown-ups laughing a lot) and smart.  He knew a lot about the caves.  I was a bit nervous at first, but then realized that it was a neat place.  He did tell us a funny story about a dragon and I actually saw him "frozen" in the stone!  He lead us down this one "hallway" and turned out the lights...it was so dark in there!  He didn't keep them off for very long.  We also went down another "hallway" and saw some crystal clear water, he said that people actually got married in that room!  After our tour we hit Gem Mill Junction and I panned for fossils.  I found quite a few neat looking things...even a tooth from some kind of animal!
Near the entrance to Indian Echo there is a "family fun center", they have an arcade, little deli restaurant and a miniature golf course.  We stopped in for a bite to eat, and it was very good.  We played a round of mini-golf.  I think Daddy won, he always wins, but I got a hole-in-one on a very tricky hole!  After we played some golf we hit the arcade for some games.  Daddy and I found an old Simpson's video game.  We had some ice cream for a snack and it was time to go.  Time for what, you ask?  The movie Transformers came out!  I wasn't too excited about seeing it, but Daddy really wanted to.  He used to play with Transformers when he was a kid and actually, I have some of those toys and enjoy them myself.  It was okay, I did watch the whole thing and didn't get scared at all.  I will tell you that I didn't like it.  Mommy and Daddy thought it was good, funnier than they were expecting.   Daddy said he would buy it when it comes out on DVD.  After the movie, the weather got pretty bad and we had a nasty thunder storm, even a tornado warning for the area for a short while.  We were supposed to head down to Harrisburg to watch the fireworks at our friends, the Garlinger's place.  We weren't sure if they were going to have them or not, but right before we would have needed to leave our house, the storms passed.  YAY!  We visited with Ron, Yolanda, and Ericka for awhile and pretty much sat in their backyard and had perfect seats for a great display of fireworks.  They looked nice going off over the lit up capital building.   We headed home, it was getting late and were lucky enough to see the Hershey fireworks as well, so we pulled off into a parking lot and got to see those before it was time to go to bed!

Hope everyone had a happy, fun and safe Independence Day!

A Gift From Grandparents Wiles
July 5th, 2007
I got my first birthday card in the mail today from Grammy & Pap-Pap!

Anyway, I got a thing called a "savings bond" and some MONEY!  Woo-Hoo!  I was happy with that!  Mommy and Daddy have been trying to teach me all about this money thing, with my allowances (spending and saving).  I said right away that I am going to put this with my other money that I have been saving so I can buy something BIG!

So, when do I get to go shopping?

My birthday is ONE day away!  I can't wait!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!
July 6th, 2007
My birthday is today...Friday, July 6th and I am SIX years old!  I think that is kind of funny!

Today was a school day, so I helped Mommy make brownies to take to school and share with my class.  They were soo good, but I was sure to save one for Daddy!

Anyway, Mommy & Daddy surprised me with a fun night!  We met up with the Hartley's at Friendly's (my all-time favorite restaurant) around 5 o'clock.   I love it there...I always get a hot dog with French fries, hold the pickle please and the monster mash sundae!  Yummy!    After dinner we met up with Bernie and Drew at Adventure Sports.  I've been going to Adventure Sports now for the last 3 birthdays.  We played a challenging round of mini-golf.  I was glad to be on "Andrew's" team!  I didn't get a hole-in-one this year.  Mommy did and Darrin rocked the course with his hole-in-one-getting abilities!  Grey struggled a bit with holding his putter and was too busy trying to put the ball in his mouth to concentrate on his game!  After our game on the course, Drew and I hit the arcade and we played a game that is like Dance, Dance Revolution.  Mommy got a video of it.  I didn't do too bad...Drew did good.  Next, it was time to hit the go kart course.  (Darrin, Jen and Grey headed back to our house to get Grey something to eat and try to see if he would sleep.)  Anyway, Daddy & me, Bernie, Drew loaded up in our "race cars".  It was a tricky course and there were a lot of people on the track which makes it some much more exciting!  I wanted to ride the bumper boats but it was getting too late and I still needed to get home and open some presents and eat some cake!  Bernie and Drew gave me a present and card.  I liked the card because it had a snake on it that was making the number 6 with his body!  They got me Lego's!  How did they know that I wanted Lego's?!  I got a Star Wars Battle Droid Pack and the V-Wing Fighter sets!  THANKS!

We got home and Mommy & Daddy had gotten me some gifts!  They got me a Connect Four game, Phlat Ball (it's like a frisbee but then it pops into a ball so it's easy to catch), the first Lego Star Wars game for the Xbox and the best gift...the  Kings Castle Siege Lego set!  It is awesome!  It has an actual drawbridge and catapults, knights, skeletons, king, and a scary awesome dragon!  (I stayed up with Daddy until midnight putting it together!)

It was time for cake and singing to me!  When I had told Mommy that I wanted a Lego party she was wondering what she would to for my cake.  My mommy is pretty smart and came up with her own idea (of course, later did see something similar to it online when she did a search).  She made me "Lego Bricks".  I picked red and blue.  They turned out pretty awesome!  Her secret design was....baked two loaf pan cakes and turned them upside-down.  She baked a tray of mini-muffins and iced them and put them on top, securing them with toothpicks.  If she would have had more time she would have made 2 more, one green and one yellow.   Anyway, they were a hit and tasted yummy!  Everyone sang Happy Birthday to ME!  This year, I find that to be very funny and slightly embarrassing, so I grin from ear to ear and giggle!

THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR MAKING MY DAY SO GREAT!  I can't wait until next weekend...I get to have a little get together with family!

Birthday Presents Are Rolling In!
July 11th - 12th, 2007
I got packages in the mail this week for my birthday from Aunt Susan & Uncle Allen.
My Aunt & Uncle sent me the Lego Star Wars Y-Wing Fighter!  This has been by far the most difficult Lego set that I've ever built on my own and I did a great job of it.  Daddy had to help me out a little bit and it's awesome!  I LOVE IT!  They also sent me the Star Wars Clone Troopers Battle Pack and a Lego Racer (blue truck).  I thought that was my gift from them (which I was more than happy with) but was soon surprised the next day with the arrival of the Lego City Fire Station!  COOL!  It was fun to build this set as it came with two trucks, working garage doors and a coffee maker for the firemen!

THANKS SO MUCH!

The World's Largest Hershey Kiss
July 10th, 2007
Hershey "Park" turned 100 years old this year.  They have been talking about it all summer long and even added a brand-new million dollar water park area to the park.  Also, the HERSHEY KISS BRAND turned 100 years old on Saturday, July 7th.  They celebrated this momentous occasion with the unveiling of "The World's Largest Hershey Kiss".

KISS ME! - slide show and a little article about the "kiss".

This yummy kiss weighed  30,540 pounds and was over 12 feet tall.  It is now in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Well...when there is chocolate THAT BIG in our neighborhood....we have to go see it! Besides, it has been awhile since we have been to Chocolate World!  Daddy took our picture and I got to buy a big chocolate bar!  You know chocolate is much fresher when you buy it from there!  HA!

Happy Birthday Hershey!

Birthday (Part 2) BBQ Weekend
July 13th - 15th, 2007
Friday - July 13th ~ Grandparents Proper arrive!  We got home from school and running some errands at the store (well, I was sound asleep in the car!) to find Grandma & Pa-Pa standing in the driveway!  Grandma had a big plate of brownies (supposedly just for me, but some how that plate quickly became empty by the next day and I had only had a couple of them and I am not a math wizard...yet...but I am pretty sure that my Grandma made me more than FOUR brownies...anyway...the jury is still out on that one!).  After my initial reaction to that....it didn't take me long to remember why they were here.....MY BIRTHDAY....and some where in their possession were my presents!  Bring em' on!  Although I was crabby ( you may notice in my photos that Mommy took) I couldn't hold back my smiles when I tore open my new Lego sets!  I've been asking them for these for weeks!  I got the AquaBase Invasion set that comes with a dangerous giant squid that had already claimed his first victim!  He comes with a skeleton in his belly!  HA!  The Tiger Shark Attack set that comes with a trident-tipped battle sub to fight the scary tiger shark!  Lastly, the Crab Crusher set!  It's the largest Aqua Raiders submarine of them all!  It will be a fight to the finish between this machine and the giant monster crab!  Grandma and me started right away building the large AquaBase set....she is good at sorting the pieces for me and I do the rest.  Soon, we had to take a break, as it was getting late and I was making silly mistakes, so it was time for bed!  I can't wait until tomorrow...Uncle JG, Aunt Susan & Uncle Allen and the Hartley's are coming over for a BBQ!

Saturday - July 14th ~ BBQ DAY!
I was up bright and early (well, for me getting up on my own), ready to finish my Lego building.  Mommy had made me a breakfast but I had to be reminded to eat it.  I can't do anything else when I am building Lego's!  Daddy, Pa-Pa and Grandma did some running around at the stores this morning, getting some last minute things...Mommy was getting some of the food ready for our BBQ.  I had to make her stop and help me finish my AquaBase set as it was getting tricky.  Mommy managed to tear me away from that for a moment so I could get dressed and finish my breakfast!

Uncle JG got here next and it wasn't long before I tore open my present from him!  He tried to trick me though.  He asked me to come help get some stuff out of his car and when I said "woo-hoo presents!" he just looked at me and said "OH NO!  I was supposed to bring presents!"  My heart was crushed and I just stared at him with a "are you jokin' me?" kind of look and trying to keep my composure....then Uncle JG smiled and laughed so I knew he was kidding....WHEW!  I'm not sure how long I could have held in my emotions on that one!  Anyway, he had a huge box in his trunk that I really struggled with getting out of the car.  I KNEW it was Lego's because it sounded like it was broken...and that only means one thing....LEGO'S!  I ripped it open before Mommy could get the camera....Mars Mission MB-01 Eagle Command Base!  YES! YES! YES!  As soon as I saw this new Lego collection in my new magazine I have been talking about it...good thing my Uncle does last minute shopping and I was able to tell him about it!  I wanted to start building it right away but Mommy said I needed to wait until later....grrrr....I didn't like that idea...but I listened.

Uncle Allen & Aunt Susan arrived and shortly after them, the Hartley's were here.  The Hartley's got me a neat Lego's thing called Lego Contraptions.  It's a book that came with some special pieces, but you have to use those along with some basic Lego blocks that you already have, if you are a true "Lego maniac" like myself.  It shows you how to build some really cool things.  I'm excited to try some of them, like the candy dispenser machine and this trapdoor cable car with a parachuting guy!  They also got me a Nerf gun shooter and a Crayola drawing kit.  THANKS!

We had a really nice day visiting with everyone but I guess the most talked about moment (not from me, I could have cared less) was the "frying" or "not so much frying" of a turkey!  Mommy had gotten Daddy a turkey fryer about 3 years ago and we never used it and thought this would be the perfect time to try it out.  Mommy planned a yummy menu of grilled sweet potatoes and corn-on-the-cob, baked beans, veggie tray, chips and dip around it.  Well....it was supposed to take the oil about 30 minutes to heat up to the temperature that we needed it to be at....after an hour...it still hadn't gotten anywhere near where it needed to be....plus the turkey would need to "fry" about an hour itself.  Let's just say a "watched pot of oil doesn't boil"!  Mommy cooked the potatoes before so they would be done in time, they were now done, if not over done, so we put those in the oven to keep warm.  Then we decided to start the corn...it wasn't long before that was done...so we just ate like the rich and had "courses".  Daddy, Uncle JG and Darrin decided to put the turkey in and just see what happens....well, after an hour of it sitting in there with the temperature still not getting up high enough...we wrapped it up and stuck it in the oven to cook for 2 hours.  Thankfully, Mommy had thought ahead and bought a bunch of meat for the grill, so Daddy cooked up some burgers, hot dogs and sausages for everyone...and we all ate that.  Next it was time to have some cake.  Mommy made cupcakes for this "party" and iced Lego bricks on them.  They were cute.  By this time of the early evening the turkey was finally done!  Everyone picked at it...it was pretty good but of course, not the full effect of a fried turkey.  Aunt Susan mentioned that it was similar to some fancy French duck recipe that sits in duck fat for 24 hours....Mmmmm....duck fat.  Oh well...all was not lost when Daddy pulled out the ingredients for my favorite Friendly's dessert....Monster Mash Sundaes!

It was a fun day and I enjoyed playing with Uncle Allen, Aunt Susan and Uncle JG.  I wish I could see them more often.

I want to be sure to take this time to THANK everyone for all my great presents.  I truly got my wish and had a very Happy LEGO Birthday!

The Birthday That Never Ends! "It keeps going and going and going.."
July 16th, 2007
I got gifts from Uncle Mark and the Lemmons Family this week!

The Lemmons family sent me a cool Star Wars Transformer!  I just know my best buddy Sam picked out my present!  He likes Transformers and he KNOWS that I love Star Wars!  THANKS!

Uncle Mark sent me a Lego Star Wars Clone Troopers Battle Pack!  I have an army of Star Wars guys now!  Plus, after I thanked him in an email...he said that more would be coming!  WOW!

**UPDATE**
7/23/07 ~ I got a package in the mail from Uncle Mark...The Transformers Movie!  The cartoon one!  Thanks!  I can't wait to watch it!

My 6-Year Check-Up!
July 19th, 2007
I had to go see my doctor today.  Mommy took me.  We waited for awhile but had fun playing with an I Spy book that was in the office.  Boy, some of them were tricky!

The nurse weighed and measured me.  I weigh 43 pounds (30th percentile), gaining 5lbs since last year!  I have also gotten much taller, Mommy has been saying that she thought I had "sprouted" up a bit this summer.  I am 45 inches tall (50th percentile), gaining almost 3 inches since last year!  Dr. Besselman said everything looked good physically.  He also thought I was a bit of a clown too.  Mommy's theory on this is that I do tend to act silly when I am nervous.  Mommy talked to the doctor about some things.  She got me a prescription for my itchy arms.  I have eczema so the doctor got me some special cream for it.  I also will be going for an ultrasound of my kidney.  I hope and so does Mommy and Daddy that this will be the last one!  We will try and get in touch with Dr. Hollowell again for her advice.  It's hard to get in touch with her since she moved out of state and we understand how busy she is

Anyway, I THOUGHT I was all done, got my stamps for being good and then I saw it laying on his desk....A SHOT!  NO!  Mommy said that I didn't' have to get any shots!  I was not happy and tried to give the doctor a hard time but both he and Mommy got me through it, it was over quick.  I was sad for a little while but I recovered.  No wonder kids don't like going to the doctors...you are always getting poked with something!  Anyway, I guess this was a new shot for Hepatitis A (you can get it from food poisoning) AND I have come to learn that I will have to go back in a few weeks to get another shot!  It's a chicken pox booster shot.  I guess they are learning that the vaccine that they were giving for that at 15 months old isn't lasting into adulthood.  Daddy already said he wasn't taking me for that appointment!  HA!

Anyway, Mommy paid the bill and made my next appointment while I picked out a lollipop....yummy banana!  Mommy took me to Friendly's for lunch.  I had my usual...hot dog with fries, cotton candy drink and my monster mash sundae!
We picked Daddy up from work and headed to Toys R Us.  I headed straight to the Lego section.  I was interested in nothing else!  I had birthday and allowance money burning a hole in my pocket!  I said I was going to buy something "big".  It took me awhile to decide and to see what I had enough money for.  I picked out the SpongeBob Bikini Bottom set!  I also had enough money leftover to get a small Mars Mission spaceship.

It was an "okay" and somewhat fun afternoon!  I'll keep you posted on the rest of my check-ups this month and next.  We were all supposed to go to the dentist but that got delayed until August!

A Whole New Play Set ?
July 22nd, 2007
It's like one now!  I helped for a little while, but mostly Mommy & Daddy spent the better part of the morning water sealing and staining my play set outside.  Since our neighborhood has no trees, the sun beats down on it pretty hard.  The wood was looking a bit worn out.  Plus, 2 of my swings cracked so Daddy picked up some new ones at Lowes.  He said that they have a glider there too.  We may get that to replace the bucket swing.  I like the idea of it because you do not need someone to push you, and since I refuse to teach myself how to swing...that would be useful for me.  Well, Mommy is hoping that will encourage me to go outside on my own more often.
I did manage to spend most of the weekend outside playing in my pool with ..................
my LEGO'S!!  I built some pretty cool boats that actually floated!  I'm so clever.

Hope everyone had a nice weekend as well.

My Follow-Up Ultrasound of my Kidney
July 23rd, 2007
I had my ultrasound today.  I was a little nervous about it, I did remember that it doesn't hurt, but I still got the case of the giggles.  The technician was a very nice lady and she got the giggles from my giggles!  Anyway....here is the report.

All looks GOOD!

The kidney is functioning and growing.  We were able to see the urine entering my bladder from both the left and right kidneys!  YAY!  I had some debris in my bladder but Dr. Besselman said it was nothing to worry about.  He also didn't think that we needed to have another specialist look at the films.  He said that everything looked as good as it did last year.  He recommends not going again until 2009!  We kind of feel like we should send Dr. Hollowell a thank you/good-bye card.  Hmm...maybe we will.  She has been so great to us.

It's Been A Movie Go Seein' Kind of Summer ~ D'OH!
July 27th, 2007
We have seen a lot of movies this summer but tonight we saw the one we have been waiting to see for months....THE SIMPSON'S MOVIE!

Mommy & Daddy surprised me after daycare today, we pulled into the movie theater and when I saw the big pink donut sign, I knew why we were there!  Woo-Hoo!

It was pretty good and funny!  Mommy sums up my experience during the film as "Cole laughed at all the jokes you would expect a SIX year old to laugh at and he didn't laugh at the jokes you wouldn't want a SIX year old to laugh at!"

If you are a TRUE Simpson's fan, there is no excuse for not going to see the movie!  I don't want to say too much more and spoil any fun for the rest.  Later, I will update with my favorite parts.
