November 2007 Journal

November is gonna be busy and we
hope it moves slowly!

I get my very first report card this month and Mommy & Daddy get to have a conference with my teacher!  Am I supposed to be nervous about this?

Week #10 ~ Kindergarten News
November 9, 2007
We celebrated learning all of our letters with all 3 kindergarten rooms!  It was fun because we got to go to the other rooms and do special fun alphabet activities!
We are learning all about Thanksgiving - Pilgrims and Indians.
We have learned new wall words: look, no, yes, at, can.  We are learning to spell more words on our own.  My teacher will help by saying the word slowly, but we have to do the rest of the thinking.
For math we are reviewing, identifying and counting number to 5.
Center time is my favorite, this week we have been completing a large graph o things we might eat on Thanksgiving, finding the missing letter on corn, matching pilgrim hats with color words, writing 4 things we are thankful for, matching words on a scarecrow and reading a Thanksgiving book.
We will be starting our Guided Reading groups very soon!

Getting Together with Friends
November 11, 2007
We have been kind of taking it easy this month, not doing a whole lot but spending time together as a family at home...and there is nothing wrong with that.  However, it had been a long time since we had seen the Fisher family and the Hartley's.  We all got together this afternoon at the Fishers and just enjoyed visiting with each other.  It was a nice time.  I especially enjoyed playing Melonie's old GameBoy.  I told her that I want Santa to bring me one of those!  I'll have to talk to Mommy about helping me write my letter to Santa.  :)
We enjoyed a nice lunch and I brought brownies!  They were yummy!  The grown-ups talked about our holiday get together next month!  I can't wait to see my buddy Sam!

Teacher/Parent Conference - Kindergarten
November 14, 2007
Mommy and Daddy had a meeting with my teacher today to see how I am doing with school.  All went well.  I will let Mommy tell you all about it:

The first words out of Miss Neiswender’s mouth were “I love Cole, he’s great.  He really makes me laugh!”    All in all he is doing really well.  Everything she talked about was not really a shock to us and at this point no major concerns.  All the technical stuff was right on the mark of where they all are.  He knew all 26 of the capital letters and 25 of the lower 28.  Mark was funny, he says, “there are 28 letters in the alphabet now?”  heehee…they are teaching them what they call “book a and book g”  he missed q, n, and the book g.  He knows 24 of the 26 sounds, missed G and W.  Knows 7 out of 8 wall words and knows (identifies and writes) all his number to 10.

As far as the “report card” part…they were only marked in 18 areas and Cole was down the middle having 9+’s and 9 checks.  He will tell you if you ask what that means….”plus that I am doing really good and a check means I’m working on doing better”.   J   There are two other marks he could get a slash meaning beginning/minimal and a big ole black “X”…well, we would know what that is!

Social Development and work habits:
Works well independently - +

Follows classroom routines - +

Demonstrates self-control – check (easy to cry – will get silly and goof off)

Organizes/cares for personal property – check (tends to be forgetful with putting away his things/papers)

Interacts cooperatively with peers - +

Completes work neatly – check (we’ve been working on this at home to…rushes, scribbles to get done)

Remains on task, completes work in a timely manner – check (again, needs reminders – will tend to get silly with friends)

Pays attention in multiple settings – check (we notice this at home, however she feels it is just developmental and nothing she sees as a “medical” concern)

Follows school rules, well-mannered – check (again, quick to get his friends laughing, easy to cry)

Proper pencil and crayon grip - +

Uses scissors correctly - +

Listening/Speaking:

Listens attentively – check

Follows oral directions – check

Waits turn to speak – check

Reading:

Identifies uppercase letters in random order - +

Identifies lowercase letters in random order - +

Written Communication:

Prints name properly - +

Mathematics:

Identifies numeral in random order (0 thru 10 is all they were really tested on for now) - +

The comments I added were not his teachers exact words and nothing wasn’t anything she was worried about but they are things we are stressing to Cole that need to change a little bit.  Cole is doing well…but I would definitely say he “likes” school but that is about as far as I would push it.  He is learning to sound spell but he doesn’t want to do it, he wants to know the right way but I have noticed he is seeing things when we are out and asking what they spell or sometimes sounding it out himself.  I have noticed a bigger interest in letters/sounds etc. since he has started school.  I mean he already knew the letters but now I think he is seeing why he needs to know them.  He brought home his first guided reading book. I’m still in a bit of shock that they are teaching kids to read so young!

I do not want it to seem like we focused on the negative because that is not true….Cole’s strengths are that he is very artistic, creative and has a great sense of humor.  We are working on continuing reading/writing skills, problem solving instead of getting so upset so quickly and his confidence.  Even his teacher said she hears him say “I can’t” a lot.  I’m still not convinced that a lot of that isn’t laziness.

Harrisburg Holiday Parade
November 17, 2007
We went to the holiday parade in Harrisburg today.  It was a bit chilly outside but not too bad.  Daddy got us there early enough for good front row seats and then he hunted down some hot chocolate for us to drink.
I liked the giant balloons the best.  Boy, they were huge!  I also like the army guys and the marching bands.  It was a long parade and because I was sitting so nice and calm...not one single person missed me when they were passing out candy!  YUM!
After the parade we decided to visit the State Museum.  We were walking right by it, had no other plans and it's FREE!
After our visit there we stopped at a Mexican restaurant for dinner.
It was a nice day.  But my most favorite part was when we got home Daddy and me played XBOX!

** First Snowfall **
November 18, 2007
WOW!   We actually got some snow tonight!  A nice pretty little dusting that covered everything on the ground and street!

I would have to do some research, but I think this may be the first time we've have snow (that stuck) before Thanksgiving!

Bring it on!  I want to sled and build a snowman.

Daddy just has been walking around here grumbling something under his breath!

***LET IT SNOW****LET IT SNOW****LET IT SNOW*****LET IT SNOW***

Guided Reading Begins
November 19, 2007
I've started my first Guided Reading book.  A Snack For Gilbert.
It's about a pig that eats.  I can read it pretty well, using the pictures clues when I get stuck.  Mommy is trying to show me how I need to look at the words and point to them as I read them.  I sometimes like to add in my own words.

Thanksgiving Break - Plus TWO!
November 21st - 28th, 2007
We started our Thanksgiving break today (21st) and Mommy got me excused for two extra days since Daddy will want to go hunting with Pa-Pa.

Wednesday ~ 21st:  Mommy and Daddy picked me up at school so we could get on the road early, we stopped and ate lunch first, then hit the road.  Traffic was not bad at all and we got to Grandma's just in time for supper!  We had fun visiting, grandma was busy making pies and I tore into the toys immediately.  I was more excited with my new toy that I got...my own gun.  I picked it out at the sports store, now I look like a hunter too!  I got to stay up way pasted my bedtime but I was excited to get some rest for turkey day!

Thursday ~ 22nd:
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!  We had a nice, lazy day.  Mommy watched the parade, everyone was busy helping to cook dinner.  I made my rolls again, this year I made them look like slices of pizza.  Mommy wasn't sure if I was being creative or lazy!  How dare she think that about me!  Anyway, I got to run the eclectic knife this year, I didn't like it.  Daddy and me ate too much hot turkey before it made it to the table.  I helped mommy set the table this year and I did a pretty good job.

Friday ~ 23rd:  Today we decided to head out and do some geocaching and visit Pymatuning State Park - the place where the duck walk on the fish!   It was a little snowy, but nothing major.  However, the farther we headed on our adventures the worse it was getting.  It was very pretty. We were careful and had one near miss on the highway.  Thanks to our anti-lock breaks and Daddy's great driving, we were fine.
Pa-Pa stopped and bought us a loaf of bread before we got to the Spillway at Pymatuning.  I wasn't really sure why we needed that much until I threw that first slice!  OH MY!  There were like 40 duck butts up in the air once I did that and since we had the place to ourselves...I was their best friend.  We fed them a few more pieces and more ducks and geese came swimming over.  Then we decided to walk over to where the fish were and all of those ducks followed me the whole way! Mommy said it looked like I was walking them with an invisible leash!  We got to the fish (carp) and they didn't have a change, but what I did get to see of them, they were huge and had the biggest mouths...but the ducks definitely took over and got most of the bread.  We tossed the whole loaf in there and had a really fun time.
We had a few more caches to get on the way home and by now, there was probably a few inches on the ground.  Grandma and me stayed in the warm car for the last hunt of the day.  Mommy was lucky to find that one without too much digging in the snow.
Next, is the tale of our trip back home.  It had just gotten dark and the snow had stopped falling and the closer to home we got the less snow there was on the ground.  It was around 5:30 when we came around the bend at the bottom of a hill, Daddy started up it and the car had different ideas, we started sliding, Grandma said, "hold on!" and WHAM right into the side of the bank!  The car bounced back away from the ditch!  Quick check on everyone and all were okay...a few bumps on the head, Daddy got the car back to the bottom of the hill and safely off the road so we could inspect the damage and see if we could drive it the rest of the way home.  Yes, just a little rubbing of the tire when you would make a sharp turn.  We got home safely and Daddy called the insurance company!  Not the highlight of our day, so we all just relaxed and remembered how much fun we did have and are grateful that things weren't worse than they were.

Saturday ~ 24th:  Today we took the Pathfinder to a garage to be sure it was safe to drive all the way back to Harrisburg.  They said it was but we had to have the sides of the brush guard cut off because of how it was hit, the sides of it were sticking out passed the mirrors and that is not legal or safe.  No engine or tire damage had occurred, thank goodness because we had just had the thing inspected and a lot of new things put in it, including tires!  Anyway, the brush guard saved us from the worst of the impact and that is why the airbags never went off.
While we were in town we did some shopping at Wal-mart!  My new favorite place in the world and only because they sell Lego's there!  I managed to get Pa-Pa and Grandma to buy me a new Exo-Force Lego guy!  I also spent my own money on a little Lego set.
We spent the rest of the day relaxing and watching TV.  Mommy was still pretty sore from the accident, she seemed to be the only one suffering from whiplash.  She said it was probably because she braced herself for the impact of the airbag and since it didn't go off, she didn't move.
Mommy, Daddy and Pa-Pa did go for a walk in the woods to fix Daddy's tree stand and get Pa-Pa's spot ready for Mondays day of hunting.

Sunday ~ 25th:  Another relaxing day.  However, I should mention that Dad and Pa-Pa took me to town, we had to get Mommy some icy hot for her neck, but I managed to get a trip to McDonald's and another Exo-Force guy out of it!  YAY!  Daddy and Pa-Pa got all their stuff ready for hunting in the morning!

Monday ~ 26th:  First day of hunting season and my Dad and Pa are out the door just as the sun is coming up.  Did I tell you that I have been enjoying my vacation and sleeping in till really late in the morning!? Mom is dreading getting me back on some kind of schedule for school!  I slept in until 11 o'clock the one day!  Yikes!  Anyway, their morning was kind of uneventful and it was kind of a rainy yucky day.  They came home for a traditional lunch of chili and homemade bread.  I think it was around 1 o'clock when we heard Pa back out in the garage!  Daddy got a buck!  YAY! It didn't have that nice of a rack, but who cares, we hunt only for the meat.  It was a 6-point, having 4 on one side and 2 on the other.  Daddy and Pa took it to the processor - they came home that night, got cleaned up and then we cooked up some s'mores in the fireplace!  Yummy!

Tuesday ~ 27th:  Nothing too eventful today, everyone was really tired and we took lots of naps!  Zzzz....   Hunters were out with no luck today, they did see some things though and got some shots off.  Spent the night playing and packing up for our trip back home and back to school for me!

Wednesday ~ 28th:  Pa-Pa had to go back to work but Daddy went out to hunt in the morning.  No luck.  We packed up and were on our way home by noon.  No problems with the car or traffic...but it sure was a windy trip home.  We had a nice time, kind of didn't get to do everything we had planned but that's okay!  Maybe next year!

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends!
