The 4th
Annual Drive-Sober 2-miler Race
November 1, 2008 |
Mom, Dad and
our friend Bernie all signed up to participate in this race.
It was on the "west shore" at the YMCA and a fundraiser for MADD
and a little boy who was a survivor of a drunk driver when he
was 5 years old. He is now 12 years old and does
motivational speeches on the subject.
I hung out with my buddy Drew, while the grown-ups ran the 2
mile race. Dad was hoping to finish in 20 minutes and Mom
was hoping to run it in less than 25 minutes. Everyone
achieved their goal - Dad finished in 17:48 and Mom's was 19:37
- YAY! Oh and Bernie did good too - 16:11! WOW!!!
No winners (Mom said they are in the toughest age group - but
even 50 year olds were beating those times!) but Bernie did win
a door prize - a free "pamper and polish" - heehee!
Mom thinks he should "be a man" and get it done!
I won a bag of prizes too...I ran (with Dad, I wouldn't go by
myself) the 1/2 mile fun run and came in 4th! I did pretty
good. I almost came in 3rd but lost a bit of my steam at
the end!
It was a fun morning, and the weather was perfect. The man
running it said they will have this race every year around the
same time (first Saturday in November) and at the same spot.
We were kind of surprised at the small turn out so we hope to
run it again next year and see more people come out for a good
cause!
When's the next race?
*Oh, and Dad is pretty sure he has shin splints, so we will be
nursing those the next week or so.....we'll keep you posted.

Hershey Park in
the Dark and Creatures of the Night
November 2, 2008 |
Seems kind
of funny visiting Hershey Park in the Dark in November but
Halloween ended on a weekend, so they kept the place open for
it. Good thing for us though, since we couldn't make it
earlier...we were busy and then the weather was horrible!
This weekend was really nice. Just Mom and I went.
Dad was still hurting from his shin splints and it would have
cost money to get him in. So, we left him at home with a
list of chores to do...heehee.
I willingly got all dressed up as a Jedi again and off we went.
I had a plan, only to trick or treat and go to the zoo! I
was nervous when we first arrived and no one was wearing a
costume...what the heck? I said something to Mom about it,
told her I felt ridiculous and she told me not to worry about it
and let's have fun. So, we did!
First, we hit Chocolate World so I could get my bag and the
"trail" started there, got my candy at the end, then we did the
loop around the gift shops. Next, we headed down to the
park....I stopped to see if I am finally a Hershey Bar and I AM!
YAY!
I just didn't feel like riding anything, but Mom talked me into
riding the train, so we did that. Next, we hit the trick
or treat trail and I got lots of candy there. I was just
really wanting to get to the zoo. Only during the camps
(which I was lucky enough to go to) and for Halloween, do they
open the park at night. We got a flashlight and went
around. I was excited to show off everything to Mom.
We are glad we bought the flashlight - it is really, really dark
there at night! The animals were up and very active.
Even the crocodile was opening and closing his mouth for us...we
saw the bats flying all over the place, the cute little fox came
right up to the glass, the wolves were walking around (Mom
thought they looked creepy in the dark) and the barn owl were
out of their nest boxes! I got scared one time - mom and I
were walking down the ramp to the nocturnal animals building
which they had decorated with a giant spider web, I was looking
at that and this guy dressed like a giant spider jumped out and
yelled at me! Ahhh! I yelled (Mom was impressed that
I didn't scream like a little girl) and said to the guy, "hey,
you should stop that!" and he said "okay" but I heard many
people yelling after that! It was funny! While at
the zoo, we stopped at the little tables they had set up, one
was at the Bear Patio, they had some live skunks out walking
around...those were cute. They had pelts of fur from
different animals to feel, I liked the beaver and kangaroo ones
the best. Mom was impressed by the eagle wing.
Another table was set up to make luminaries for the zoo. I
worked really hard and long on mine, it turned out pretty nice,
they lit it up for me so I could see it. I drew a huge and
brightly colored rainbow with a pot of gold under it. We
walked around and got back to the beginning and I was not done
yet, so we went thru the houses again.
We left the zoo and made our way back into the park and I wanted
to ride the Kissing Tower and see what Hershey looked like at
night. I thought it was cool...and told mom that it was
romantic and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Uhm....Mom said
that I'm in my "I'm in love with my mom phase" - it's a phase,
right?! After that ride, I was ready to go home...it was a
long walk back to the front of the park to catch the tram.
We had a fun time and can't wait to come back for Hershey Candy
Lane!

Pizza Hut
Days & My "Book-It" Award
November 4, 2008 |
The PTO is
having their Pizza Hut fund-raiser days again, where 20% of our
total bill gets given to the PTO for my school.
I had also completed my first month of independent reading and
earned myself a free personal pan pizza!
Mom AND Dad (which is a surprise because he is usually still
stuck at work) picked me up from bowling tonight and we went out
for dinner. I also got a cool tag that I put on my
backpack - its about being a good reader and I got to write what
my favorite book was on it. It was a tie between Captain
Underpants and Junie B. Jones - the world's funniest first
grader books. Mom squeezed both names on there. Then
I was supposed to write what book character is like me, well, I
decided that there is no one quite like me...and Mom wrote that!

Parent/Teacher Conference - First Grade - First Report Card!
November 6, 2008 |
Tonight Mom
and Dad had their scheduled conference with my teacher, Mrs.
Sweigard. I was excited to get to go play and hang out at
my friends house while they went there. Here is Mom to
fill you in:
Mark and I went to
Cole’s parent-teacher conference and all went well.
We arrived and the first thing she says is “Okay, I need to
ask you a question that I am a bit embarrassed to ask” Mark
and I are like “oh no” heehee. She asked how to pronounce
our last name…so we told her and she said since the
beginning of the year, she had been saying it like it looks,
then one day in October (when Cole was student of the day)
she said the class was “interviewing” him and he said his
name. She said to him “Oh my Cole have I been saying your
name wrong all this time?” and he just looked at her and
said “yea, I guess so!” HA! I told her that it doesn’t
surprise me that he wouldn’t have corrected her! She felt
bad, and we just said that’s okay, he’s going to get that a
lot. I’m going to start putting a line over the “o” !
Anyway, his report
card was good, there are some things we discussed that need
improving, non of which we were surprised to hear. Things
that mesh with how he was in Kindergarten and mostly
have to do with his “self-control” issues and respecting
authority – not that he talks back but needing to listen and
do what he is told without argument. For example, when he
is given a warning, to heed that, and then when it’s gone
beyond that issue – taking his yellow card without crying
about it (which she said had only happened a couple times –
Mark was worried he was crying a lot at school) or making
up excuses. All behaviors we see/get at home and are
working on. She did say that it has been getting better
since the first days of school.
The other thing we
talked about was his reading, which he is doing really well
with and is AT benchmark, but some other skills that
go along with that need worked on. For example, making
predictions – when they are first about to read a book, they
are to go thru and look at the pictures and try and predict
what is going on or what could happen.. He just wants to
tell you a little bit of what he sees in each picture and
won’t elaborate past that thought. I’ve noticed this while
reading at home, he definitely does not have a passion for
reading (yet, I hope) – it is more like I know I have to
read this book, lets just get it done. Also, reading with
expression – he’s kind of mono-tone. Mark just looked at me
when she said that….he is the same way! So, they are both
going to be working on that one! Heehee! So, there is
more to Reading than just reading the words….if that were
the only case, I would have to say he is above benchmark.
So, we may slow down a bit on the more challenging books and
focus on these other important skills.
Okay – here’s the report. They changed the

Pretty
good, almost split even down the middle (just like his first
report from last year) total of 37 areas observed
having 19 >’s and 18 *’s. Cole said himself that he didn’t
have very many stars, but I told him it was his first report
and we talked about the areas he can work on for next
marking period. He seemed a bit upset with himself….but
confident that he can change a few of them. I also told him
that his teacher said that he had a very creative mind and
could really come up with some creative and interesting
ideas. Mark and I were especially glad to hear that he was
actually participating in class. One thing I never did or
enjoyed doing…having that fear of being wrong. We discussed
his social skills and shyness issues. She said she sees him
playing with others kids, however it is always the same
group and they have their moments of getting along…heehee.
No
major red flags but we have some things to work on.

I'm Sick
:(
November 7, 2008 |
I told mom
yesterday that my throat hurt and boy did I wake up sick this
morning - at 6AM! My throat hurt so bad, I couldn't sleep
any more. Mom took my temperature and it was 99.7, got me
all set up on the couch with blankets and pillows from my bed.
It ws a good thing that today was a day-off from school.
She checked my throat and it didn't seem to be infected so she
figured it was from my runny nose draining down my throat.
She gave me some medicine to help dry it up. I just laid
on the couch all day...we watched movies together and snuggled.
We watched Home Alone (we both love this movie) and Garfield's
Thanksgiving and Kit Kittredge An American Girl (yea, sounds
like a chick flick but it was good). I had some popsicles,
that was all I wanted...and Mom got me to take a nap! Yes,
a nap! I slept all afternoon, from 12:30 to 4:30! I
had a fever of 100 before that but woke up with a normal one, so
the nap was a good thing. I finally felt better around 5
that I wanted to play on the computer for a little while.
Dad got home and brought me some Ginger Ale and ice cream -
yummy sherbet that felt good on my throat. We watched some
Simpson Halloween episodes together and it was time for bed.
I was actually tired....so it felt good to crawl into my bed. |
Karate Class #70
November 8, 2008 |
I made it to
karate this morning...I was feeling much better from being a
pretty sick little guy yesterday. It had been 2 weeks
since I had been to a Saturday class. I told Mom I was
still sick but she thought I sounded pretty good, I ate a good
breakfast and no fever...so she talked to me about commitments
and following thru on them...even though I was maybe still
feeling a little sick, I could gather myself enough for a half
an hour class. Huh, she was right...I had a good time,
class was fun and I still feel okay.
Sensei Cory taught class today...all by himself. I've
never had a class with just him before and he did a pretty good
job. We grouped ourselves into belt levels and took turns
practicing and "showing off" our Universals. I don't know
the name of the new routine we have learned but it's pretty cool
looking. Mom wants to try and to get a video of me doing
it, but sometimes I just don't cooperate for that. We do
this cool thing called a "leaning kick". We also practiced
some new self-defense moves and reviewed flipping our attacker.
We got Sensei Cory every time! It was fun!
Also, I remembered (well Mom did) to bring in my report card.
Mrs. Carol and I went over it and she said it was pretty good
and I earned my
RED STAR
(Mom has no idea how she is going to sew that on!) but we had to
choose one thing that I need to work on improving for next time.
We all thought (and I am sure my teacher would agree) working on
my self-control would be a good one, it's going to be a tough
one for me to change...but I'll work hard at it!
Another exciting thing...it's time for me to get SPARRING
GEAR!!! I can't wait to have my own, but mom said I may
need to wait until after the holidays. I want orange ones!
Plus, a really cool karate bag to carry it to class in!
Plus, I need a display rack to hang in my room to show off my
belts! Dad grabbed a magazine from the school filled with
all kinds of cool karate stuff...I am so making a list for Santa
with that!

Art
Reward
November 12, 2008 |
For school
today, I chose to wear my Sea Turtle shirt I got when we visited
Florida in 2007. My Uncle Mark (and Lisa too) volunteers
for the Sea Turtle Preservation Society and we went there to
check it out. I had also gotten a book about Sea Turtles
there....anyway. Today, I had art class and we are working
on a turtle project. My teacher was excited to see my
shirt and I answered all kinds of questions. I was a good
listener, an active participant, and used my creative mind.
So, I got an award! YAY! I was very excited to show
it to my parents!

**First Snow**
November 21, 2008 |
WOW!
We actually had snow today...and snow that actually stuck to the
ground! It was so exciting. Mom woke me up to get
ready for school, pulled up my blind and I was "blinded" by a
beautiful white snowfall! It was great. Mom thought
so too...Daddy just groaned a bit and mumbled things under his
breath.
We didn't get much accumulation but it was enough to completely
cover the grass. I ate up my breakfast and went outside
and played around in it a bit before it was time to head out for
the school bus! I did have to do a quick sock/shoe change
though.
Unfortunately, the snow did not last long and was mostly all
melted by the time I got home from school. So, no sled
riding yet...but I can't wait!

BLACK STRIPE
Testing (Focus)
November 24, 2008 |
I have gone
full circle with the stripe colors in karate. The first
stripe I earned in karate was a black stripe and that is what
this month's stripe was. Black for Focus. This
month's newsletter was all about teamwork, so we have been doing
a lot of fun activities focusing on that. We did a lot of
relay games - boy were those fun.
I have 2 stripes (white & black) on my yellow/white belt...so
that means I only need one more then I graduate to a solid
yellow belt! I can't wait. The closer I get to being
a green belt...the closer I get to trying to be on the S.W.A.T
(super winning attitude team) Team! Another exciting thing
about being a yellow belt...is I get to start sparring! I
sure hope I get sparring gear for Christmas!
My belt graduation ceremony should be in December sometime, we
just aren't sure when it is yet! I am hoping someone
besides Mom and Dad can come cheer for me this time!
Another thing is that my GI is starting to look pretty cool...I
have 2 red stars on the front and 6 black/gold stars on my right
leg and 1 (soon to be 2) silver stars on my left!

Happy
Thanksgiving!
November 27, 2008 |
Thanksgiving
was a bit different for us this year but we still had a really
nice one. With Daddy's work schedule, my schedule, and the
higher costs of travelling expenses...we opted to stay home this
year.
Our neighbors, The Richard Family, invited us to spend the day
with them and their family. There were 14 total. How
nice. I was excited to have my friends Jared, Alec, and
Devin to play with all day. The grown-ups helped get the
food ready and talked about grown-up stuff.
Mrs. Richard had so much food there, and she makes the best
chocolate chip cookies. I could not get enough of
those...I even snagged some to bring home! We had a
gigantic turkey and I ate 3 huge pieces of "bright" meat!
My favorite! I also ate 3 rolls and some apple cider!
Mom made her sweet potato casserole and everyone ate it
up...they loved it and all want the recipe.
The men cleaned up and washed the dishes - the kids played Army
and the women cleaned up the tables and put the food away.
The grown-ups played some card games and then it was time for
dessert! So, I had to have more cookies!
We thanked them for the invite and great time and we all came
home and crashed on the couch!
Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and that you stuffed
yourselves with a lot of turkey...just like I did!

Decking the
Halls.......
November
28-30, 2008 |
Friday ~
We starting decorating for Christmas today. I was a
big helper too! I helped to clean up the living room,
picked up my playrooms (both of them) and my bedroom. I
helped get the curtains down so Mom could wash them. Once
Dad got out of bed, he helped too...but we already had the
living room tore up! Heehee.
I helped Dad get the outside decorations put up. Thank
goodness it was a much warmer day today so we didn't freeze out
butts off while doing that!
Mom had to go get her haircut, so Dad and I put the tree
together and strung the lights. Good thing we had some
spare boxes...every year we seem to have issue with the lights!
Not sure why they are only lasting us a year! Ugh....it's
so annoying. We will have to remember to buy some after
the season or if we see a good sale and put them away for next
year! Nothing is worse than trying to put up your tree and
you are out of lights! Dad also said we may be due for a
new tree soon, we had a lot of needles fall off this year.
Heck, it's like having a real tree!
We had a nice day decorating...oh, but we are not even close to
being done. Tomorrow is another day. We'll get the
tree finished and then the other stuff put out. Mom said
we would do my room next week. Since I rearranged my room,
we need to figure out where to put it!
Saturday ~ I had karate this morning, then we did a
little shopping and then back home for lunch and time to finish
the tree! I was excited. As matter of fact,
when I got up this morning and came downstairs, I asked Mom if
it was Christmas yet! I'm gonna drive her nuts if I am in
that frame of mind already! heehee. She said we
would make a count-down calendar again this year. Anyway,
I was a maniac with hanging ornaments. Dad was excited to
see me so helpful. Mom told me I didn't have to hang up
all of them, but I did! I hung up 3 times as many
ornaments as Mom and Dad! I don't know what they were
doing. Mom put on the beads and ribbons, then it was time
for me to put on the angel. I got to ride on Dad's
shoulders, but I am getting pretty big, doing that next year is
gonna be tough! We didn't get to much else...we still have
all the decorations that just "sit" around the house. Mom
said tomorrow...and then we will put up my tree. I told
Mom that I would do it, she just needs to help me with the
electric.
Sunday ~ Today was the day that Dad left and headed to
the Grandparents Proper's house...he was going to be hunting
with Pa-Pa for a few days. Mom and I finished decorating
the house...everything but the dancing/singing snowman
collection of mine that take about 100 batteries. So, I
guess we need to get some at the store. Mom helped me to
set up my tree. I decided to put it on my dresser, we
strung lights on my mirror too and I hung up all my ornaments.
I put some new window clings on my windows...a Christmas train
and a Nativity. It was a busy morning but we got it all
done!
|
Mom and Cole's
"Camp Out" Night
November 30, 2008 |
Well, since
Dad was away for hunting season and I still had the next day off
of school. Mom planned a fun night for us! First, we
went to the grocery store and got stuff to make our own pizza!
We also picked out some yummy ice cream for dessert!
We decided that we were gonna set up the air mattress "tent",
eat our pizza and ice cream and watch Christmas movies (as many
as we could squeeze in until we were too tired to stay awake).
I decided to make the pizza into the shape of a heart. It
was cool...the crust was pretty thick so we had to cook it for a
little while first, but boy was it yummy when it was all done!
We watched Home Alone (again, the 3rd time so far!) and then The
Grinch - the "real" one. Mom was tired before me...so
after that one we decided it was time for bed! I slept
great...Mom said she didn't think I moved all night!
It was fun but it would have been more fun with Dad!
I hope he has a fun and successful hunting trip!
